Xiang Yu, also known as Xiang Ji, was a prominent military leader during the late Qin dynasty in ancient China (232 – 202 BC). Born into a noble family in the state of Chu, he rose to prominence after the Qin Dynasty collapsed due to widespread rebellion. Xiang Yu was known for his immense strength, battlefield prowess, and strategic brilliance.
He played a key role in overthrowing the Qin Dynasty, leading rebel forces to victory in numerous battles. His most famous victory was at the Battle of Julu against the Qin army. After the Qin's fall, Xiang Yu divided the former empire into eighteen kingdoms, proclaiming himself the "Hegemon-King of Western Chu," demonstrating his ambition to rule.
However, his reign was short-lived. He engaged in a power struggle with Liu Bang, who later founded the Han Dynasty. Despite numerous tactical advantages, Xiang Yu was ultimately defeated at the Battle of Gaixia. Facing overwhelming odds and betrayal by his allies, he chose to commit suicide rather than be captured, solidifying his place as a tragic hero in Chinese history.
